  • The Odessa Philharmonic Hall is located three blocks from the Opera and Ballet Theater at the intersection of Bunina Str. (formerly Politseyskaya) and Pushkinskaya (formerly Italian) Str. It was erected in 1898 by design of the outstanding architect A. Bernardatsi and is undoubtedly one of the best creations of the Master in his long career. It is reminiscent of the Doge’s Palace in Venice for, skilfully imitating the Renaissance forms of the Florentine school, the architect gave the ceiling of the main entrance the form of a heavenly vault decorated with zodiac signs. The external décor was created by M. Molinari who used stained glass and Carrara marble. The philharmony’s patio architecture is no less good; once inside it is like entering the Italian Renaissance. Magnificent white marble stairs lead to the hall of 910 square meters in area and 12 meters in height. Its walls are decorated with paintings of the Petersburg artist Karazin, and Florentine painter, Cassioni, representing scenes of trade culture in different stages of mankind’s development.> Odessa Philharmony is a successor and continues the Odessa Philharmonic Society that was established in 1848. Performances by F. Lizt, A. Glazunov, S. Rakhmaninov, N. Lysenko and many others have all taken place in the city’s musical life. Odessa Philarmonic Orchestra today has one of the strongest symphonic collectives of the country. Its leader – an American conductor, Hobart Earle, a Bernstein student and a former conduct
