The World in Florence 2022: the appointments not to be missed

With the publication of the preliminary program of the International Festival of Diversity of Cultural Expressions “The World in Florence” which will take place from 16 to 18 November 2022, the Life Beyond Tourism Travel to Dialogue Movement, thanks to the joint work with the Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation and the LBT Scientific Committee, unveils the names of the distinguished institutional guests who will personally supervise the sessions dedicated to Learning Journey.

As anticipated in the previous article (click here to read it) the Learning Journey, places and cultures in transition section is divided into three sessions in which there will be authoritative moderators and speakers who will deal with the topics illustrated through a series of debates and activities which will also involve the participants.

Heritage Challenges for the Future.

On the 50th anniversary of the 1972 World Heritage Charter, it is possible to think of the changes that have occurred over the last few decades to the concept of Heritage.

  • What are the new meanings and what are the new cultural policies that aim at the inclusion of other concepts and other uses of heritage?
  • What type of itinerary can promote the development of the territory while respecting the local identity and can stimulate respect for the diversity of the territories?
  • How to educate to travel so that it is a moment of openness and meeting between different cultures, unhinging the superstructures that lead to understanding one’s own as a superior culture?
  • How to stimulate the new generations to have mental elasticity that allows for real learning and comparison with contexts that are also very distant from their own?

Heritage for the Planet

Cultural heritage and traditional knowledge have developed in a logic of respect and cooperation with the environment in the long term. Since the industrial revolutions, people have begun to model natural systems according to their interests without taking into account the repercussions.

  • Currently, despite the growing widespread awareness, market rules prevail over the logic of respect for the environment. Which power culture and heritage have in changing our choices and habits?
  • Travel, in the contemporary sense, is a highly polluting activity. What are the ways of traveling that allow comparison with other cultures, good practices and contexts with a reduced environmental impact? What is the compromise between the benefits of the trip and its cost for the environment?
  • People (man) have modified and destroyed ecosystems, what are we doing to protect and restore them? What is the role of heritage in this process? How to educate for a conscious and respectful consumption?

Heritage for Peace

Global conflicts over time have severely damaged people, natural and cultural heritage, economies and local identities. It is necessary to practice intercultural dialogue in order to learn to know, welcome and support diversity. The communication of places in this process plays a fundamental role.

  • What can heritage do to prevent conflicts between peoples?
  • Violence and conflict are parts of the human being, but an education to learn how to manage the social implications associated with these emotions is not taken for granted. Respect for differences represents an antidote for conflicts, what does it mean to promote a journey in respect of the different territorial realities?
  • Education can greatly contribute to the prevention of conflict by educating in the search for correct information, with attention to the sources, by training a capacity for critical thinking that eludes the manipulative processes of political and economic propaganda.

Important and highly topical issues are those which will be discussed in November 16-18 in Florence at the Cenacolo of Santa Croce.

Participants will be actively involved in the scheduled seminars as well as learning valuable information on the enhancement of the cultural identities of the territories through the storytelling created for the 2022 festival. Live streaming of the whole festival is foreseen and online participation too.
