HERITAGE for BUILDING PEACE 2025 (H4BP-2025)

 
 

APPEAL

to the international community, and in particular to UNESCO in its capacity as a specialist United Nations Agency, UNESCO – in keeping with its Constitution – contributes to building peace, to rooting out poverty, to sustainable development and to intercultural dialogue through education, science, culture, communication, interpretation and information and to all public and private international organisations involved in the conservation and enhancement of heritage and to all those that have recourse to heritage in the pursuit of their activities.

 

 

Context 

Our appeal to build peace through heritage is rooted in the origins and the very foundations of UNESCO – the United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture. As soon as hostilities ceased in the period immediately after the end of World War II, a conference was held in London, in the United Kingdom, in the course of which it was decided to set up an organisation embodying a genuine culture of peace. This new organisation was designed to constitute the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind and, in so doing, to prevent the outbreak of another world war. At the end of the conference, thirty-seven countries founded the United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture. The UNESCO Constitution, signed on 16 November 1945, came into force on 4 November 1946 after being ratified by twenty countries.

 

 

Recalling

the words of UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay at the most recent session of the Executive Board in April 2025, to the effect that:

“Education, science, culture and the free circulation of ideas and knowledge embody fundamental human values. They also constitute the basis for lasting peace. Over 75 years after its establishment, UNESCO reiterates the importance of its humanist vision for guaranteeing respect for human dignity. Our world needs education, science, culture and information. Our world needs humanity”.

Contesto 
Il nostro appello a costruire la pace attraverso il patrimonio affonda le sue radici nelle origini e nei fondamenti stessi dell’UNESCO – l’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l’Educazione, la Scienza e la Cultura. Non appena cessarono le ostilità nel periodo immediatamente successivo alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, si tenne una conferenza a Londra, nel Regno Unito, nel corso della quale fu deciso di istituire un’organizzazione che incarnasse una vera cultura della pace. Questa nuova organizzazione era stata concepita per costituire la solidarietà intellettuale e morale dell’umanità e, in tal modo, impedire lo scoppio di un’altra guerra mondiale. Al termine della conferenza, trentasette paesi fondarono l’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l’Educazione, la Scienza e la Cultura. La Costituzione dell’UNESCO, firmata il 16 novembre 1945, entrò in vigore il 4 novembre 1946 dopo essere stata ratificata da venti paesi.

le parole della Direttrice Generale dell’UNESCO Audrey Azoulay durante l’ultima sessione del Consiglio Esecutivo nell’aprile 2025, secondo cui: «L’istruzione, la scienza, la cultura e la libera circolazione delle idee e della conoscenza incarnano valori umani fondamentali. Costituiscono inoltre la base per una pace duratura. A oltre 75 anni dalla sua fondazione, l’UNESCO ribadisce l’importanza della sua visione umanistica per garantire il rispetto della dignità umana. Contexte 

Notre appel à construire la paix par le patrimoine trouve ses racines dans les origines et les fondements mêmes de l’UNESCO – l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’éducation, la science et la culture. Dès la fin des hostilités, au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, une conférence s’est tenue à Londres, au Royaume-Uni, au cours de laquelle il a été décidé de créer une organisation incarnant une véritable culture de la paix. Cette nouvelle organisation avait pour vocation de constituer la solidarité intellectuelle et morale de l’humanité et, ce faisant, de prévenir le déclenchement d’une nouvelle guerre mondiale. À l’issue de la conférence, trente-sept pays fondèrent l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’éducation, la science et la culture. La Constitution de l’UNESCO, signée le 16 novembre 1945, entra en vigueur le 4 novembre 1946 après avoir été ratifiée par vingt pays

Nuestro llamamiento a la construcción de la paz a través del patrimonio tiene sus raíces en los orígenes y los cimientos mismos de la UNESCO —la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura—. Tan pronto como cesaron las hostilidades, en el período inmediatamente posterior al fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se celebró una conferencia en Londres, en el Reino Unido, en el transcurso de la cual se decidió crear una organización que encarnara una auténtica cultura de paz. Esta nueva organización fue concebida para constituir la solidaridad intelectual y moral de la humanidad y, de ese modo, prevenir el estallido de otra guerra mundial. Al término de la conferencia, treinta y siete países fundaron la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura. La Constitución de la UNESCO, firmada el 16 de noviembre de 1945, entró en vigor el 4 de noviembre de 1946 tras ser ratificada por veinte países
