The Life Beyond Tourism Non-Profit Portal

The Life Beyond Tourism Non-Profit Portal® is an offshoot of the Life Beyond Tourism® stance promoted by the Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco.
Life Beyond Tourism® has opened the Life Beyond Tourism Non-Profit Portal® as a practical application of its ethos: the Portal is an international platform for exchanging experiences and good practices for intercultural dialogue through a tourism based on values rather than a tourism that revolves only around services and consumption.

The Portal Mission

The Portal was created to provide potential visitors to a territory with an overview of the territory’s “cultural personality” by presenting its significant cultural expressions - institutions (museums, cultural institutes, foundations) and those economic concerns both prominent and less visible – with distinctive traits such as to efficaciously illustrate the ways a territory copes with change.

Aims

The Portal aims at promoting reciprocal acquaintance among territories in different parts of the world, through communication and interpretation not only of a culture’s heritage of tangible assets but also the intangible or ‘immaterial’ heritage from which each culture has arisen.
Life Beyond Tourism® aims at valorizing that intercultural awareness that is so vital in today’s world and at overturning the prevailing conception of tourism – and especially of what we have come to know as “mass” tourism, perceived as a threat to cultural heritage - into a strategic opportunity for intercultural dialogue. The destinations – and in particular such World Heritage sites as Florence – may in this manner become “workshops” for reciprocal knowledge and shared growth in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

What's on the Portal?

Concise but eloquent pages present the motivations, origins, and daily activities of each cultural institution and economic concern, complete with images that present the essential features and distinguishing elements of each and a space for continually-updated information about initiatives and activities.
The Portal strives to communicate the “personality” of sites – their “spirit of place” – as each faces and reacts to inevitable historical changes. Not a fixed identity, therefore, but the particular way each place deals with changing reality, is what the Portal most importantly strives to express. One day, the Portal content may become a tool for aiding the Foundation’s work in its role as study and research center, or a research tool for universities and research centers, another useful instrument to add to many others available for building the cultural biography of a place.

The Portal as a platform for exchange

On the Portal, cultural institutions, companies and individuals are invited to exchange ideas, projects and plans, and knowledge using the blog, forum, and photoblog platforms.
Users thus have the opportunity to use an interactive platform to communicate an intangible heritage made of the motivations and aspirations that breathe life and eloquence into the tangible manifestations of the heritage of a site – and therefore to foster in-depth knowledge of places and people and respect for cultural diversities.

Why join?

Ours is the only portal that introduces visitors to all aspects of the culture of a territory, since it presents both the cultural institutions and the economic concerns that together define the cultural personality of a place as it evolves through history. Keywords in the presentation of each institution or concern facilitate theme-based searches and appropriate information directs users to the transportation networks and the accommodations in and around each place of interest. The Life Beyond Tourism Non-Profit Portal does what other portals cannot: it offers alternative itineraries linked to intricate tapestries of the interwoven cultural expressions that make each place unique and define its distinctive “spirit.”
