The Satoyama Initiative Regional Workshop in Florence
(United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability
Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco)
Revitalizing production landscapes in Europe: travel and dialogue for people and biodiversity
Welcome message to the UNU-IAS Partners
The Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco (Partner of IPSI) with its International Institute Life Beyond Tourism, wishes to express its welcome and gratitude to the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability and all the Partners of the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative.
It is of great significance for our Foundation, having worked with these institutions, to bring to Florence for the first time the Satoyama Initiative Regional Workshop.
After 5 years of commitment with its own international university network, the Foundation has finalized a theoretical approach and a practical model for the “fruition and use” of the heritage, knowledge of diversity and dialogue among cultures; Life Beyond Tourism and its International Institute - established for its implementation - emphasize travel as a tool for the realization of those objectives, which themselves are functional to the sustainable development of individual territories.
Florence and its surrounding area have over the centuries developed a particular balance between landscape, cultural tradition, typical production, and social and land management which must not be overwhelmed by tourism, a phenomenon in which industrialization and commercialized aspects have taken an oppressive position compared the knowledge and enjoyment of territories.
The Foundation and Life Beyond Tourism are so pleased with the choice of the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative to make Florence a further step on the path to the improvement of scientific knowledge and to share the principle that travel and dialogue can become tools to revitalize production landscapes and preserve biodiversity, as indicated by the title of this workshop.
The President of the Board of the Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco       Paolo Del Bianco

The Director of the International Institute Life Beyond Tourism               Emma Mandelli
