If Florence still has a soul after the invasion of mass tourism and after the cars filling its streets, perhaps this soul lies into the old market of San Lorenzo. The San Lorenzo district is a “noble” neightborhood bordered on the one side by the busy Via Nazionale, while on the other side by the Basilica of the Saint and by the palace of the Medici family, who chose to live in this part of the town both while alive and after their death.

Before reaching the heart of the Central Market in Florence, we enter a sort of ‘circle of hell’: made up of ‘desks’ gathered together and almost overtopping themselves. They are covered by commodities and souvenirs for a rushing tourist who might have to visit all of Italy in only three days – juggling between Murano glasses, Venetian masks, silk scarves, Florentine straw hats, and the figures of Neapolitan cribs.

These ‘desks’ create a striking contrast with church domes and the columns of the buildings in the surrounding streets: but we should not worry, because it simply is a different tour offered by this city, which everyone in the world want to see, at least once in a lifetime.

At n. 12 Via del Proconsolo in Florence, a surprise is waitng for me: the Museum of Natural History, unknow to most people. It is of particular interest to me because it houses objects fromTibetan culture but it is not open to the public yet.
