Ideas that flow like a river… with Nerdi Orafi Firenze
Nerdi Orafi Firenze is one of our prize sponsors and we wanted to tell you about the birth and significance of the custom pendant that they made for AWA. Silvia and Daniela Messeri tell the story in their own beautiful words.
It was a cold February morning when our dear friend Andrina Richards Lever, Canadian born but Florentine by adoption, came to visit us. That morning, she told us about Plautilla Nelli, this hidden artist that she had discovered thanks to AWA, and she said she was sure that a collaboration amongst us, amongst women, would be fruitful. I remember she said “the strength of women for invisible women.”
A few days later, Andrina returned with Linda Falcone, AWA’s Italy Director, in tow. Her enthusiasm and stories flowed like an unstoppable river. Linda was thrilled by our bottega’s authentic simplicity and our way of working within Florentine traditions, so she asked Daniela to develop a work of jewelry that would represent Plautilla Nelli and the many “Invisible Women” of our city’s art history. It was a short but intense visit.
Daniela started sketching ideas that could visually tell the story of these extraordinary, strong women artists. She had tons of ideas because this is a story that has so many angles to it.
Finally, with Linda’s direction, we came to agree upon a design that represents the artist’s palette with a deliberately curved paintbrush, testimony of the strength and determination of women artists who do not bend to or conform to the norms of society that tried to control and hide them for centuries.
This design took form as a jewel, a pendant available in three materials: in silver, silver with gold, and 18kt gold. It has been made using a hammering technique on the palette contrasting with the smooth and thick form of the brush.
So that’s the story of how these pendants came to be, as three levels of “perks” for this campaign. A story of ideas that flow like a river, with great joy. This is how we have personally contributed to the restoration of this unique work by a feminine hand. Women, for women.
Thank you.
