The course consists of 6 modules that are designed to address some of the most salient aspects of the Japanese culture, its art, history, tradition. Each module will be imparted with a frontal presentation and discussion with the participants, which will be accompanied by presentations, movies and music to complete the comprehensive picture, as well as by the visit to the Japanese collections of Palazzo Coppini; during the hours of explanation, debates and in-depth interventions will be encouraged.

Module 1: Remarks on the principle of Verticalism in the Japanese society
This course offers a key to the understanding of the tradition and modernity of the Japanese society and identifies how, despite the changes of the post-war period, Japan hasn’t changed fundamentally in the structure of its social system, but remained the same, identifying the specific traits that are considered to be characteristic of this Country.

Module 2: Some notes on the Japanese family and the traditional concept of the extended family, patriarchal and hierarchical
The concept of collective responsibility, the sense of belonging to a group and the concept of mutual and vertical respect: a clan in the modern interpretation. Social structure of pyramidal shape and organization of hierarchical type that arrives from the top involving the lowest levels, assigning to everyone a very specific place impossible to be confused; family is the first step for understanding of this complex social model.

Module 3: The figure of the Samurai: a relic of the past?
A cultural-historical analysis of the Samurai and its cultural importance in the history of Japan in the XIX century transition. The figure of the professional warrior from the early days of Japan till the tragedy of the Second World War. His roles in the reconstruction of the Country as a social unity and economic and military power. His belief, applied as a behavioural model and as a part of the national soul, that can be felt anyway in every Japanese person.

Module 4: The figure of the woman in the warrior society of the feudal Japan: a still relevant example of strength and patience?
The female figure in Japan and its links to traditions; her importance as an educational pivot in the traditional and modern family. Her role as a modern entrepreneurial manager, almost like a transformed re-presentation of her warrior qualities of previous centuries. Her strength and patience in the family  context.

Module 5: The concept of Bushidō in the rising Japanese nationalism of the XIX century.
The resumption of concepts and behaviors that has never been never written if not at the end of the XVIII century. The evolution of the reference models and the adoption of behavioral patterns taken from the past, as a socio-cultural glue and family educational model. The rising militarism and disruption of behavioral models imposed up to the tragic epilogue tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Module 6: Notess on a day in Tokyo, a never told story of a great man and his Japanese experience. Reading some notes of Professor Fosco Maraini, which allow to see through the eyes of a keen observer the life and the hidden aspects of a society in the ongoing economic and industrial development.
